Camera Gear

I have decided to add a new category of posts about camera gear. This may be something of a learning curve for me as well, since I don’t really have that much experience with buying cameras and lenses etc. But I figured that if I share what I learn it might be useful. Please also feel free to comment on gear I have mentioned, I would love to try out other people’s recommendations.

Does Gear Matter?

I read an article this week in Outdoor Photography about whether the kit you have matters. After initially being irritated that the article seemed to be suggesting that having the best kit is vital, especially since I don’t have the most sophisticated camera, I thought about it some more and realised that it did indeed have a very good point. The kit you have is one of several limits on what you can achieve, if you don’t have a macro lens then you obviously can’t shoot close up, no wide angle and you may find landscape difficult. Low quality optics then you may not produce images as clear as they can be, but you should look at the difference and decide what works for you. ISO performance can be important if you want to shoot in low light, poor quality can mean grainy images, which is fine if that’s the artistic effect you want, but not so great if not.

In general you should consider what you are shooting and how that related to the gear you need, buy as good as you can afford, and focus your money where it will make a difference to the type of photography you take. Don’t go for ISO performance if you never shoot low light, don’t go for state-of-the-art high speed auto focus if you don’t shoot action. You don’t need the most MegaPixels if you never print you images to wall sized.

And most importantly don’t get me wrong you still need photographic talent, if you can’t see a good image then having the best (and most expensive) camera in the world won’t help. Spend some time practicing, get out and look around and take pictures with whatever you have (be that a phone camera or the latest dSLR), look at others’ work for inspiration, when you realise that your kit is holding you back, then is the time for a new camera.

Canon 60D

I also thought I would mention the Canon 60D (and Canon range in general), since several people I know are looking at buying this camera, I have done a lot of reading about it.

In summary it seems to be a very good camera, suitable for someone who has owned a DSLR before and wants to upgrade while not wanting to splash out on a semi pro camera like the Canon 7D. Those looking for an introductory model should look at the 550D.

I really like the vari-angle screen that the 60D comes with, apparently it’s the first time the Canon range has used it and it seems like a really good idea. The only criticisms that reviewers seem to have is that it’s less sturdy than the 7D and the auto focus system isn’t as good. Having held the camera those seem to be true, but it still feels like a well made piece of kit. And while the auto focus is definitely slower it strikes me that it would only be worth the extra money if speed was important to you, for example you use it for sports or wildlife photography.

For someone who is a landscape photographer one of the disadvantages is it is not a full frame camera. Admittedly, full frame cameras are really expensive and generally for professional photographers, however for a landscape photographer, where being able to take in a large or panoramic view is important it may be something that would come in handy.

Website Update – March 2011

I have been adding lots of new sections to my website over the last few weeks.

A new summary of all of the photography services that I offer can be found on this page, and includes prints and canvas prints, stock photography, artwork prints and commissions and photographic products like calendars.

The stock photography gallery should be useful to image buyers as it allows quick browsing through my image collection and creation of a lightbox which you can save and send to other buyers or editors. Have a look at the Stock and Licensing page for details.

As before you can still look for images to purchase as prints or canvas prints in the galleries or art galleries.

You can also find full details about my Hand Painted Photography artwork here. I’m constantly adding new work so do check back regularly.

Cambridge Open Studios

I’m very excited to announce that I will be taking part in Cambridge Open Studios in July 2011!

This event in the Cambridge area is where artists open their studios up to interested visitors so that they can come and see how they work and what they have been producing. While I will not actually be opening my studio, I will be sharing a space with several other artists (Carrie Ian is hosting, her contemporary paintings can be found here) and you will be able to see what I have been working on. Our event will be taking place at 142 Blinco Grove, Cambridge, on the first 3 weekends in July.

Cambridge Open Studios has been established for many years, however over the last couple it has been undergoing a large change programme following the withdrawal of Arts Council funding. The organisation and event is now fully funded by its member artists and last year’s event was something of a revival following a couple of years of declining numbers.

I’m really excited to be taking part this year, and look forward to seeing many visitors to my exhibition.

Have a look at the Cambridge Open Studios Website if you want to find out more about the many artists taking part.

I will also try to keep adding regular updates about the exhibitions as we get closer the event.

New Sales Venues

I now have a number of further outlets for my photography and artwork. This also includes some new products which are available from some of them.

PhotoBox Pro Gallery I have now set up a gallery on the site and this means exciting new products such as placemats, coasters, acrylic prints and hopefully photobooks. Have a look here to see what is available. I will try to keep it updated with current images but please let me know if there is anything you have seen on the site you wanted added to purchase.

Etsy I have added an Etsy shop to list prints, and possibly the originals of some of my paintings. I also intend to add some of my photographic prints as well.

RedBubble This is an excellent site where I have added a gallery of work. You can also buy calendars of my work, as well as purchase cards and posters and when I get around to it I was also planning to add some t-shirt designs base of my photography.

Cambridge Open Studios I have recently joined the Open Studios programme in Cambridge, I haven’t decided whether to take part in the exhibition part of the project which is next July, however I would like to. In the meantime I have added a gallery of some of my best work on their website.

Comuniart I have joined the Comuniart website, based in the Cambridge area. I have listed some of my work in their galleries here, but most is the same as on this site.

Do also remember that posters and canvas posters are available at UrbanLightbox, and photographic prints are avaliable in the galleries on this site. If you like the work that I do, please tell people about me. I’m also always happy to take artwork commissions for Hand Painted Photography, just contact me to find out more.

Calendars

I’m excited to announce that I have found a company that prints custom calendars, therefore I will be starting a range of calendars, beginning with a collection of my hand painted photographs of Cambridge and the colleges.

RedBubble is the company that will be doing the printing and you place your order directly with them on their website that can be found here. The gallery of my available calendars can be found here. I hope to be adding more very soon.

My first calendar is a compilation of lots of my Cambridge College Hand Painted Photographs, which I have been announcing over the last few months, see this post for some examples and here for how they are made.

I hope you like the calendars, I hope to be adding more in the future. Please do let me know what you think by adding comments, or requests for particular sets of images.

Photoblog

I have decided to add a photoblog to the site, it will be featured in the sidebar at the top left of the homepage. I plan to post interesting photos there when I find them and hope it will allow me to challenge myself as a photographer to find interesting things to put in it.

Posts to this will not show up in the usual feeds for this blog, if you are interested you must add the seperate feed at the bottom of the PhotoBlog. You can find it here.

The first post I have added is a shadow self portrait, I might try and add other self portraits with a twist at some point.

All of the previous posts to this photoblog can be found here.

New Wiltshire Gallery!

As I mentioned in a previous post I have been away in Wiltshire taking lots of pictures which I have now finished sorting through and added some new galleries. You can find them here!

I visited lots of places, including Salisbury, and the Cathedral there, Britford (a small village just outside Salisbury), Beaulieu and the National Motor Museum, Caen Hill Locks.

The following images are some of my favourites from the trip!

I really enjoyed this trip, there were lots of good sunsets which I really enjoy takings, and it also gave me lots of time to experiment with some new techniques. For example I have taken a number of pictures using short depth of field which I am quite proud of, like the one of the flowers above. I also managed to get out a take lots of pictures with the early morning mist and sunrise. Overall I’m very pleased with the results, but I am keen to hear what you think so feel free to drop me a comment.

I think my favourite part of the trip was the tour of Salisbury Cathedral Tower I took, the view from the top was very impressive and I have some quite stunning panoramic pictures from there.
