Photography Course

I’m currently taking a new course in film photography at the moment and really enjoying it. I haven’t really done much work in black and white before and so it’s totally different experience and way of thinking to the usual work I do.

There is something quite magical about taking a seemingly blank piece of paper, putting it into a chemical bath and seeing an image appear.

It also takes lots of new skills and experimentation. There are so many new things that you can achieve. It also made me realise I really like to be learning to do new things and experimenting.

So far we have looked at the film developing process, then the printing making and developing process, most recently some more advances techniques such as dodging and burning to balance the exposure across an images. I’ll try and post again in more detail about the methods used once I have worked on them some more.

We are also trying to work on a shooting project around a word, mine is ‘Environment’. I think I’m going to focus on the conflict between manmade environment and nature, like flood defences and where the weather has worn down buildings. But I’m also looking at the different patterns that appear in nature as well as buildings, cities and other human environments. Watch this space to see what I come up with.

Winter Weather and Christmas Cards

I hope to be able to get out very soon and expand my range of Christmas Cards, firstly by taking pictures of the Cambridge Christmas Lights and Decorations, but also in the strong frosts (and possibly snow) over the next few days. I managed to get out this morning and take a few pictures, hopefully more will follow soon. A small selection is below.

I particularly like the objects like the tyre in places that you wouldn’t expect to see them. I think it has a lot of interesting detail work, the same is also true of the fence post/wood detail. I also really like the different colours in the fields. The strong frost really picks them up well.

Christmas Cards

This week I am releasing the first of a set of photographic cards for Christmas. Included in these are Cambridge Christmas Cards and other landscapes and buildings in the snow in my local village and the surrounding fens. Have a look in the Christmas Card Gallery and see which you like. As usual with my cards they are sold on the UrbanLightbox website.

The cards are the same style as my regular PhotoCards, including a hand mounted photograph on the front, blank inside for your own message and include envelopes. Have a look here for information and ordering instructions.

The prices for the cards are listed in the table below.

If you are looking for a very large order please contact me to discuss your requirements.

I plan to release further cards later in the year, possibly including Christmas Illuminations and Christmas Decorations. So watch this space for new developments or subscribe for updates.

New Wiltshire Gallery!

As I mentioned in a previous post I have been away in Wiltshire taking lots of pictures which I have now finished sorting through and added some new galleries. You can find them here!

I visited lots of places, including Salisbury, and the Cathedral there, Britford (a small village just outside Salisbury), Beaulieu and the National Motor Museum, Caen Hill Locks.

The following images are some of my favourites from the trip!

I really enjoyed this trip, there were lots of good sunsets which I really enjoy takings, and it also gave me lots of time to experiment with some new techniques. For example I have taken a number of pictures using short depth of field which I am quite proud of, like the one of the flowers above. I also managed to get out a take lots of pictures with the early morning mist and sunrise. Overall I’m very pleased with the results, but I am keen to hear what you think so feel free to drop me a comment.

I think my favourite part of the trip was the tour of Salisbury Cathedral Tower I took, the view from the top was very impressive and I have some quite stunning panoramic pictures from there.

New Devon Gallery!

As promised in a recent post, I have now added pictures from my recent time in Devon. All of the images can be found in the Devon Gallery, I hope you will enjoy having a look.

Being on holiday I decided that I would try out a couple of new techniques, the first I have already posted about previously with the ND filters and I thought that was quite successful. The second, I thought I would try out was to concentrate on collecting a set of images of similar subjects. In this case I decided that types of doors are very varied and might make an interesting collection. Some of my favourites are shown in the gallery below. I thought that I might try and turn them into a multi-image poster of as many different types as I could find, watch out for details.

Staying just to the north of Dartmoor also allowed for some wonderful landscape photography and sunsets. The picture below of the stunning Dartmoor vista is my favourite.

Finally the many different colours of the fields in the area, be they meadow, or crops, or the bare earth, provided a vivid contrast worthy of a picture.

I shall be adding more pictures as I sort through them, but please let me know what you think of these ones so far.
