New Artwork – March 2011

Sorry that I haven’t updated you on my artwork recently, I have been busy creating lots of new pictures, as well as working on my photography and taking a course in film photography. But anyway, here is an update of my latest paintings.

Ely Ice Cream Van I really like this picture, it has lots of colour in it and looks quite traditional. I think it picks up a nice detail on Ely market.

Through the Beach Huts II, Southwold This is one of my favourite photographs, so it only seemed right that I should have a go at painting it. I think it has worked well, the colours are more dominant than the photograph, but I think it gives a nice effect.

The West Window, Salisbury Cathedral This is a detail picture of the West Window at the cathedral in Salisbury. It is taken from right at the base of the window while on the tower tour, so provides an unusual view. I really like the stong colours in the images and the amount of detail in the picture.

The Wine Merchant, Cambridge This is another picture in the series of Cambridge images I am trying to create that are not based on colleges. I really like the traditional style of the building, and the cycle detail at the bottom.

Great Court, Trinity College, Cambridge This is probably the most famous court in the country, it’s a panoramic images and I like the way that it leads the eye around to see all the interesting details.

New Artwork – October 2010

I have been working on lots of new artwork recently, following is a round-up of all the new pictures I have painted and a short description of each.

I think my favourite is the Sole Bay Inn, Southwold. It just has so much detail and interest. It’s also quite special to me as I have been on holiday to Southwold many times in the past. I hope you enjoy looking at the rest of them.

The Sole Bay Inn, Southwold This is a small pub in Southwold, which should be familiar to anyone who has visited this small seaside town on the Suffolk coast. I really love the colour contrast in the picture, and it holds lots of good memories for me.

The Cathedral Lantern, Ely This study of the Lantern on Ely Cathedral gave me the opportunity to paint lots of detail in, it is the second in a selection of studies of different parts of Ely Cathedral.

Senate House in Snow, Cambridge When I started to paint this picture I wasn’t really sure about how it was going to turn out. It just looked really grey and miserable, however when I finally added the spots of colour to the grass under the melting snow, and to the urn in the centre I thought it sprung to life and now I am really pleased with the results.

Rose Crescent, Cambridge I thought it was time to try and paint parts of Cambridge that are not just the colleges, and this was the first one I have tried. I really like the result, and the bikes make it look like a typical Cambridge scene, while the person in the background adds some life.

Robinson College, Cambridge This painting is of my college and therefore had to happen at some point. I really like the variation of greens on the lead in, as well as the many different colours in the bricks.

Clare College, Cambridge Another classic Cambridge college, I really like the lavender details in the lead in to this picture.

St John’s College Chapel II, Cambridge This is the second painting I have done of St John’s Chapel and I like the way the red brick hall offers a contrast to the sandstone of the main chapel.

Magdalene College, Cambridge I like all the garden details in this painting, and it offers a different view of a college, rather than simply being the front entrance. I’m going to try and paint more of the colleges in views that are less commonly seen.

New Artwork – September 2010

Whilst being on holiday I have been busily painting away and have been very pleased with the results.

The gallery below shows the latest works I have created and following is a short description of each piece.

All of the works will be available to buy as prints, either on canvas or as paper prints, have a look at the Artwork Gallery for details.

Clare College Panorama This is the view from the Trinity Hall bridge looking up the river Cam towards Clare College and King’s. I really like all the detail that is in it, particularly the way the chapel shows over the top. I think it’s one of the classic Cambridge views. I was particularly pleased with the way that the many colours in the brick walls turned out.

King’s College Chapel This view of the chapel at King’s is another classic and very well know view. I think the person taking photographs adds some scale to the picture, as well as reminding me about photography too! I plan to also paint a side view of the King’s College Chapel at some point, as well as some details.

Porters Lodge at Selwyn College I love the detail in the brickwork in this work, as well as the college crest above the door. The bikes in the rack also add another nice interest.

West Door at Ely Cathedral This is the first of several detail works of Ely Cathedral. I really like all the detail in the stonework and think that the floor adds a nice focus to the picture.

Ely Cathedral This is another Ely work, I really like the post detail in the front and the way the plants on the wall lead the eye to the Cathedral tower.

New! – Hand Painted Photography

As I mentioned in a previous post, in addition to my new digital artwork I have now been working on Hand Painted InkArt. These are based on my photographs which have been reprocessed into outline drawings and then printed onto canvas. The canvas is then painted using thin acrylic paints to maintain the outlines while creating a hand painted piece of original artwork.

You can have a look at them here in the new Hand Painted InkArt Gallery.

These are available as prints in two sizes. A 5″ x 7.5″ size print on art paper and an 18″ x 12″ limited edition size both as a canvas print and an art paper print. See the pricing page for details. The originals (usually 18″ x 12″ on canvas) may also be for sale at some point, please contact me if they are something that you would be interested in.

As always let me know what you think of them.

Below are a few examples of what I have been working on, some of them are not completely finished but they should give you a good idea. When they are finished they will appear in the gallery. If you are very interested in the ones below do contact me.

About PhotoSketchArt

This is the first of three posts about my new artwork, this one focusing on PhotoSketchArt.

As I mentioned already all of this new artwork is based on my photography and enables me to make use of pictures which may not make the best photographs but make very interesting pencil drawings.

Having taken the photograph I then use various tools in an image editor to transform it into a sketch. Several things can be controlled during the process, including the level of detail picked out, the darkness of the final sketch and crucially, as in true sketching, details that don’t contribute to the picture can be carefully removed. All of this serve to create a very interesting final image.

This technique is particularly well suited to architectural subjects, as they have lots of fine line detail. This is why it works well for Cambridge colleges and other buildings of that style.

I am planning to add a series of posters using this technique very soon, incorporating many different images of Cambridge into the same poster, possibly around a theme like bridges or college entrances. Watch this space for further details.

To see PhotoSketchArt I have created so far please have a look in the PhotoSketchArt Gallery.

Below is a series of images showing the transformation from photograph to PhotoSketchArt.

Early next week these will be available to order as small prints in size 7″ x 5″ and large limited edition prints in 18″ x 12″ size, watch out for further details.

New! – Digital Artwork

I have been working on some new work in addition to my photography. I have added a page for Digital Artwork all of which is based on my photography, but has been reprocessed to take on a more arty feel. Please let me know what you think of it.

There are three types of artwork, SketchArt which looks like a pencil drawing and works very well for architectural type drawings. InkArt which has a pen and ink effect to it, and can also be accompanied by a watercolour wash effect. MosaicArt, this is a single large picture which is made up of many small pictures. I haven’t created any MosaicArt yet, but I shall post again when I do.
